The fuel system is critical in storing and delivering the gasoline or diesel fuel your  needs to run. It consists
Fuel tank. Basically a holding tank for your fuel. When you fill up at a gas station the gas travels down the filler tube and into the tank. In the tank there is a sending unit which tells the gas gauge how much gas is in the tank.
Fuel pump. Located in the fuel tank, the fuel pump, which nowadays is usually electric, simply pumps fuel from your gasoline tank to your engine. The pump creates pressure in the fuel lines that pushes the gasoline to the engine. Unused fuel is returned to the fuel tank. In most cars the fuel pump delivers a constant flow of gasoline to the engine.
Fuel filter. Clean fuel is critical to engine life and performance. Fuel injectors and carburetors have tiny openings which clog easily so filtering the fuel is a necessity. Filters can be before or after the fuel pump, sometimes both.
Fuel injectors. The fuel injector is basically a tiny electric valve which opens and closes with an electric signal.

Common Problems.
1. The most common problem is a clogged fuel filter. Make sure you follow your manufacturers recommendations as to when you should change the fuel filter. Symptoms include sputtering at high speeds or engine not starting at all. Always check the ignition system first, if that's ok then the next suspect is the fuel filter.

2. Next most common problem is the fuel pump failing. Most modern electric fuel pumps can be heard when you turn the key on. If you don't hear the pump running and your car will not start, it could be your fuel pump. Fuel pumps can fail for a number of reasons. Most commonly because of contamination, overheating and over time, the gears in your fuel pump wear out.

3. Last but not least is dirty injectors. While the fuel filter does a good job of filtering the fuel, it's not perfect. Over time deposits and tiny particles lodge themselves in the injectors. This can clog an injector and prevent it from delivering the fuel the engine needs. It can also cause an injector to stick open and send too much fuel into the engine.
Regular fuel injector cleaning will improve your vehicle’s acceleration. You’ll save money on gas and cut down on harmful emissions. It can even extend the life of your engine.

Maintenance on the fuel system is pretty simple. The main component is to keep clean fresh fuel in your vehicle. Contamination and debris are the number one cause of fuel system failures. Because the filter, pump and fuel injectors are all part of an interconnected system, dirt and debris can clog one part of the fuel system. This can lead to damage with other engine parts, which can quickly lead to deteriorated performance or complete engine shutdown if not regularly maintained.

For this reason we highly recommend coming in for a fuel system cleaning annually, or as recommended by your vehicle manufacturer and your vehicle owner's manual.
